Biography

About Me

I moved to Des Moines from my hometown of Davenport in 1985. For the next 2 years I worked as a substitute teacher, along with part time jobs as a psych tech in a local hospital and a residential counselor at an area group home. In 1988 I landed a full time job as a teacher in Des Moines. It was at there that I met the future Mrs. Verdon. We married in 1994, and I have been a husband and step-dad ever since.

I live in Altoona with my wife, Julie, and our Labrador retriever, Shiloh. Our kids are now grown. Nicole, our older child, is a graphic designer living in Des Moines with her husband Nick. Chad, our younger, is a journeyman plumber in Des Moines. We are very proud of both.

My hobbies include canoeing, camping, walking my dogs, playing guitar, and writing silly songs. When I retire in a few years I plan to become the next Taylor Swift!

Education

I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1985 earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education. I have also taken graduate classes at Iowa State University and Drake University.

Teaching Experience

In 1987 I began my career at Harding Middle School and remained there for 22 years. In 2010 I joined the staff at Hoyt Middle School as an 8th grade math, and later, science teacher. In 2015 I moved to the 6th grade team at Hoyt and began teaching Global Studies. So far, I love the energy and curiosity 6th graders bring to the classroom!
