Kristy Beckwith

Power Reading Intervention Teacher

E: kristy.beckwith@dmschools.org

Biography

Biography:

I love teaching middle schoolers! I consider myself a life-long learner and enjoy expanding my own knowledge and awareness. When I’m not busy being a teacher, I relax by hanging out with family and friends. I spend my free time gardening, reading, biking and enjoying music events of all kinds. I also do some volunteer work in an effort to help others and to give back to my community. I have a shamefully spoiled and pampered dog named Bentley who loves to go for walks with me. My husband Tim and I enjoy traveling and seeing new places. It is our goal to visit all 50 states. We have 14 more to go!

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree from University of Northern; Master’s Degree from Viterbo University; K-12 Reading Endorsement.

Teaching Experience:

5th Grade Teacher at Howe Elementary;

Reading and Language Arts Teacher and Speech and Drama Teacher at Goodrell Middle School;

Reading Interventionist at Hoyt Middle School.

Class Content:

In my Focused Reading classes, I work with students in small groups to improve their word accuracy and reading fluency skills. If a student reads with accuracy and fluency, then they will be able to better understand and comprehend what they are reading. When fluency improves and they are reading at the correct pace, they will be able to tackle the long assignments given in high school and college. Once a month, I will monitor students' reading rate and comprehension level. The building goal is for students to read 155 words per minute with three or less errors. It is so important for students to read at home for an hour and a half to two hours a week.

Grading:

Results from Aimsweb fluency each month will determine a student's grade.

SP/3 Significant Progress-Student has reached goal on progress monitoring.

AP/2 Adequate Progress-Aimsweb score is on or above the black goal line.

MP/1 Minimal Progress-Aimsweb score is below the black goal line but above the starting score

NP/0 No Progress-Aimsweb score is below the black goal line and below the starting score.

Classroom Expectations:

We SOAR by keeping hands and feet to ourselves, listening and following directions, paying attention and doing our best, listening to Mrs. Beckwith when she is teaching and showing respect for self, others and property. Here's to a great year!

About Me

I am excited to be part of the staff here at Hoyt Middle School. I was raised in the Cedar Rapids area, but I have many family ties to the East Side of Des Moines. I am very passionate about being a special education teacher because I grew up in a household with a sister who has autism. She has positively impacted my life and has made me a better, stronger individual.

Before coming to Hoyt, I’ve gotten to be a part of many amazing programs during my college education. The most influential programs I took part of were Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, Kids On Course, AmeriCorps, Best Buddies International, Strong Girls (a book club just for girls to read books about strong, inspiring women), and the Arc of East Central Iowa.

Outside of school, I enjoy being with my family, reading lots of books, and spoiling my pets.

Biography

About Me

I am a Des Moines native and I love calling Iowa my home state.  I also love to travel as often as possible. What’s my favorite destination so far? That would be a tie between New Zealand and Tahiti. Growing up, I attended Greenwood, Hubble, and Fairmeadows Elementary Schools,  Stillwell Jr. High and Valley High School.  I graduated from Graceland University and currently hold a position on the Alumni Board of Directors. I very rarely read a book just once. When I am not at Hoyt, I can be found hanging out with my family, in a bookstore or at Target; I might need a Target intervention.
